Fishing

Looking for a good place to catch that big one?  Well you've come to the right place.  Brevard County has something for just about anyone that loves angling.  Whether you like fishing for that big ol' bass or you want to head offshore to score a nice Mahi dinner, you will find that and more right here.

At the north end of the county there is world famous Mosquito Lagoon, known for big bull redfish and gator trout.  There are numerous places along the Intracoastal Waterway to cure that inshore fishing bug from there to the south end of the county at Sebastian Inlet.  Many small creeks and rivers flow into the Indian River from the mainland and you can bet that as forage fish get caught coming downstream, there will be Snook, Trout, Redfish, Jacks, Tarpon, and many other predatory fish cruising by looking for a meal.  Some surprise visitors to the Intracoastal (especially the closer you get to the Inlet are Tripletail and the occasional Grouper.  During the beginning of winter as the cold fronts start to bear down on the Space Coast, flounder make their presence known in and around the Inlet.  Anglers from all over converge on the Inlet for a chance to land a "doormat" for dinner.  The Pompano run will also send locals running for their secret spots and will buy up all the clams and frozen sand fleas in the county.  Opportunities abound for the inshore angler in Brevard.

The beaches of southern Brevard County offer endless possibilities for the fishing enthusiast.  From coquina to sandy bottoms, the beaches are home to anything you can find in the Indian River and more.  Anglers catch everything from pan sized pompano and whiting up to smoker kingfish and huge sharks.  Head down to Sebastian Inlet and you never know what you may catch.

For those venturing offshore, your choice is simple.  Canaveral or Sebastian.  Bottom fishing fanatics will find several varieties or Grouper and Snapper in residence as well as Black Sea Bass, Triggerfish, and many others.  Mahi, Kingfish, Cobia, Tripletail, Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna, Bonito, and many species of shark can be found throughout our offshore waters.  Atlantic Sailfish can be caught at any time, but the action heats up as they migrate southward during late winter and into spring.  For the adventurous, there are yellowtail tuna far offshore and some even take a trip over to the Bahamas.

Freshwater fishing abounds here too.  Just to our south is the famed Stick Marsh.  The St John's River runs through the county from south to north and there are several boat ramps that provide access to those wishing to venture out there.

Not enough for you?  Well trailer that boat and head down south where the offshore fishing can get crazy in sight of land.  Head out of anywhere from West Palm south and you will find that the fish you were motoring for hours searching for may be only minutes away from the beach.

Coming this fall, Weekly fishing reports from Brevard Youth Sports!  Check us out as we take to the river and ocean for weekly updates from around south Brevard county (Occasionally other places too!).

FWC seeks local input

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking input about current and past water sports activities in Brevard County.  The agency is hoping a survey at http://myfwc. com/Boating/survey/WaterSportsSurvey.htm will help it better understand what types of water sports are taking place and where and how these activities may have changed over time.
